Become a BRLT volunteer!

Volunteers are the heart, mind and backbone of Boothbay Region Land Trust (BRLT) - in short, BRLT can only do what it does because of the dedicated work of hundreds of volunteers. Volunteering is work, but it is also a chance to meet new people, to socialize, to spend time on the preserves and to actively engage in preserving the special places and our way of life in the Boothbay region.

Let us know you’d like to volunteer through one of the following ways:

    1. Send an e-mail to volunteer@bbrlt.org. Include your name, the type of volunteer work you are interested in and any other information you’d like to share, e.g., interests or skills.
    2. Stop by the BRLT office at 1 Oak Street (at Townsend) across from the library to fill out a Volunteer Card.

Click here for a volunteer intake card.  Complete the card with your information and drop it off at the office or mail it to BRLT, P.O. Box 183, Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538.

  • Events: These include our annual Boat Builders Festival held every July or August, a hugely successful and fun volunteer-led event; plus our Annual Boat Trip, Volunteer Picnic and other special events or fundraising events.
  • Office help: The BRLT only has 2.5 staff but we do the work of many more thanks to our volunteer corps.  Come join Carolyn, Julie and Wolf in the office a few hours every week.  If you are a detail-oriented person who enjoys working with the public, you may want to be an office volunteer.  Office volunteers help answer the phone, greet visitors, photocopy, provide information and sign-up for special events, sell BRLT merchandise, write thank you notes and assist with other office tasks.
  • Special projects volunteer: Join the staff to complete special projects, typically in the BRLT office.  If you like variety and enjoy taking a project from inception to completion, you may want to be a special projects volunteer.
  • Stewardship: Become a Steward (link to description of Steward).  BRLT preserve or come out to work parties throughout the year to help with trail maintenance and lands upkeep.
  • Outreach and The Osprey Store: Represent the BRLT at community events and sell BRLT merchandise for the BRLT Osprey Store off site at various area events, e.g., Fall Foliage Festival.
  • Mailings: Several times a year, volunteers get together to catch up on life, what’s happening in the community, and – oh yeah – stuff envelopes and newsletters for the BRLT mailings.
  • Nature guide/hike leader: Each year the BRLT offers free hikes and tours of the BRLT preserves to the public.  Most of these hikes are in the summer but we are receiving more requests for fall and winter hikes too.  Nancy Bither, our resident birder; Lauren Stockwell, our resident botanist; Wolf Schumann, our resident forester; and Rupert Neily, our resident story teller lead hikes every summer but we could use some extra leaders.  Let us know if you have some knowledge of our flora and fauna, our history or if you just like to lead hikes.
