Thanks to the support of more than 80 Barters Island property owners and friends, the land trust was able to purchase the 42-acre Schoolhouse Pond Preserve in 2001. The property was the site of a schoolhouse from about 1840 - 1895. The cranberry bog is known locally as Schoolhouse Pond. The scenic, mile-long loop trail includes a variety of
wildflowers, a mixed forest, interesting rock formations and a beautiful, old stone wall. The Schoolhouse pond can be found by following the wider, multi-use trail through the center of the property. This trail is believed to be part of or near the old Barters Island town road that ran down the center of the island.

Since 1980, the Boothbay Region Land Trust (BRLT) has protected hiking trails, islands, scenic shorefront, beautiful forests and historic and prehistoric sites for the permanent enjoyment of residents and visitors to the area.
